Shaping public spending priorities for adult social care

This report investigates some of the key issues currently confronting those involved in planning and providing adult social care at a time of budgetary pressure. With local authorities preparing to introduce a series of cost saving measures, adult social care budgets are under greater pressure than ever before. Ipsos MORI spoke to senior stakeholders to understand the challenges that they face and to find out how their organisations are planning for the future.

School for Social Care Research

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has established a new School for Social Care Research. The aim of the school is to increase the evidence-base for adult social care practice. The SSCR will undertake high-quality primary research and provide a focus for applied research in social care within the NIHR.

Resource designed to provide ready access to relevant policy, available evidence and emerging practice on topics of current importance. It addresses topics where the evidence base is currently less well-developed, but where practitioners and managers still need to access emerging evidence and information to help inform their practice. Themes include outcome-based commissioning and contracting, support brokerage, joint strategic needs assessment, and social firms.

Personalisation: What do we Mean?

Wendy Harrington, Professional Development Manager with the Association of Directors of Social Work, speaks about personalisation and community capacity building in Scotland. This talk was delivered at Personalisation and Community Capacity, a joint seminar and workshop by the Perth and Kinross Council and University of Stirling Partnership. It was held at the University of Stirling on 4 December 2009.

Understanding the needs of adults (particularly parents) regarding relationship support

Qualitative study that the DCSF commissioned Newcastle University and the Family and Parenting Institute to undertake. Issues identified include enhancing the understanding of how adults form and manage relationships; the relationship support needs of adults in different personal circumstances, and in a variety of relationship types; and to gather evidence which can guide the development of new policy initiatives to support adult couple relationships.

SCIE’s response to the adult social care green paper, derived from our ever-increasing knowledge of adult social care services, gained from our extensive stakeholder collaboration and our commitment to user- and carer-defined outcomes. As the key organisation tasked with developing the knowledge base for social care, SCIE believes it is important to examine the implications of changes proposed in Independence, well-being and choice.
