Health care in care homes: a special review of the provision of health care to those in care homes

Review which aimed to look at how well the health care needs of people living in care homes were met, based on commissioning and provider behaviours. The scope for the review set out to consider practice not just in individual care homes, but to focus attention on the rights of people in care homes to access NHS services that met their needs. This included GP services and pathways for continence care, NHS support for care homes to ensure quality of health care through direct provision of district nursing services, and training for care home staff.

Delivering dignity: securing dignity in care for older people in hospitals and care homes. A report for consultation

This draft report, based on expert evidence, recommends fundamental changes to the culture, leadership, management, staff development, clinical practice and service delivery of care homes and NHS hospitals to secure the dignified care that is the right of all older people, with the belief that getting it right for older people will mean getting it right for everyone. The three organisations which have established the Commission want to play a major role in supporting hospitals and care homes to improve dignity in care, led by the staff who are working there day to day.

Commissioning care homes: common safeguarding challenges (SCIE guide 46)

Guide that aims to identify the issues that commonly lead to safeguarding referrals from care homes. The underlying causes are also identified; neither are in order of prevalence.

Prevention checklists are provided to help both commissioners and providers to work towards a reduction in occurrence of these issues. There are additional links to resources.

Care in crisis 2012

This is the second report detailing the depth of the care funding crisis. In May 2011, Age UK published its first Care in Crisis report, setting out the background to the current care funding crisis and our fears for a system facing four years of public spending cuts.

It was predicted that these would reduce spending on older people’s care by £300 million over 4 years and that real spending on older people’s care would be £250 million lower in 2014 than in 2004.

Report on inquiry into the regulation of care for older people (3rd report, session 4)

The purpose of the inquiry was to investigate whether there were any particular weak points in the regulatory regime of care for older people and whether safeguards were sufficiently robust.

In the wake of high profile events in the care sector such as the collapse of Southern Cross Healthcare Group and closure of the Elsie Inglis Nursing Home following the death of a resident, the Committee considered that it was timely to consider the regulatory system for social care in Scotland and conduct some post-legislative scrutiny in this area.
