Disabled children's services national indicator 2009-10: local authority (LA) reports

A collection of disabled children's services national indicator reports setting out findings for each local authority (LA) area for which there was sufficient response from parents from the 2009-2010 survey to measure parental satisfaction of services for disabled children. Each report provides indicator and sub-indicator scores, as well as analysis of parents' comments relating to services in each of the following areas: health, education, and care and family support.

Making sense of traditional Chinese medicine

This booklet provides an introduction to traditional Chinese medicine for anyone with a personal or professional interest in coping with mental health difficulties. It looks at Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, and explains how it can help with problems ranging from panic attacks to psychosis, how to find a practitioner and what to expect from a consultation. It also includes information about some of the herbal preparations that are suitable for self-medication.

The changing needs of people with sight loss

Presents the findings from a research study which identifies and explores the changing support needs of people with sight loss from the clinical, visual function and quality of life perspectives. Data were derived from biographical narrative interviews and a visual function questionnaire with people with sight loss, and semi-structured interviews with professionals involved in the delivery of specialist visual impairment services.

Making the economic case for the promotion of mental well-being and the prevention of mental Health problems

This report begins by asking why there should be investment in promotion and prevention. It then summarises what is known and gives examples of study findings on wellbeing, early intervention,, depression, suicide and workplace health promotion. Ongoing and future evaluations are noted and the need for more European assessments emphasised.

Dignity in care web site

Dignity in Care is a campaign being run by the Department of Health's website in the UK. It "aims to eliminate tolerance of indignity in health and social care services through raising awareness and inspiring people to take action." The focus of the campaign has mainly been on older people but has now been extended to include people with mental health needs. The website provides further information on the different aspects of the campaign, including relevant publications.
