Public attitudes to youth crime: report on focus group research

Paper that reports the findings of a series of focus groups set up to explore public attitudes to youth crime.

The topics included the respondents‟ views of:
- the extent of crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the local community and the perceived causes of these
- restorative justice
- volunteering and the role of the community in preventing crime and in supporting youth justice.

Pathways from crime: ten steps to a more effective approach for young adults in the criminal justice process

The Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance is a broad coalition of organisations, that evidences and promotes ‘the need for a distinct and radically different approach to young adults in the criminal justice system; an approach that is proportionate to their maturity and responsive to their specific needs. The T2A Pathway identifies ten points in the criminal justice process where a more rigorous and effective approach for young adults and young people in the transition to adulthood (16-24) can be delivered.

Audit that looks at the performance of the principal justice agencies through the eyes of the victims and witnesses who use them.

There are many aspects of our justice system that are very positive – for example, the fall in crime and anxiety, and rise in public confidence – but this audit shows that despite these changes, victims and witnesses are still not treated as well as they should be.

Restorative justice: time for action

The overuse of custody in the past two decades has resulted in an overburdened and ineffective prison system. In spite of record spending, re-offending rates remain high and public confidence in the criminal justice system low. This report highlights how at a time of austerity, resources need to be focused on responses to offending that are efficient and effective, and which also meet the needs of victims and communities.

The introduction of restorative justice approaches in young people’s residential units: a critical evaluation

This report evaluates Hertfordshire County Council’s introduction of restorative justice in its young people’s residential units. It provides quantitative data about police call-outs to residential units before and after the introduction of restorative justice. It also presents qualitative data drawn from the experiences of young people living in residential units, as well as from the staff who work in them.
