Report presenting the findings of a study which investigated the continuity of care experienced by prisoners before and after release. It also makes recommendations as to how continuity of care between prison and the community could be improved.

Out of sight, out of mind : the state of mental healthcare in prison

Report focusing on the treatment of mental health problems in prisons in England and Wales. Its research suggests a third of the spending on mental health services in prison is spent inefficiently and that, in general, prison mental health care is poor. It offers recommendations to rectify this situation.

SCIE Resource guide 22: Children of prisoners - maintaining family ties

This report brings together resources and research about maintaining family ties for children of prisoners. It provides a review of literature from the past fifteen years as well as examples of practice from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland of what works to support children and their families. The findings highlight the negative impact parental imprisonment can have on children. This area of work cuts across a number of sectors and requires a multi-disciplinary readership and response if outcomes for this group of children are to be improved.

Short-changed : spending on prison mental health care

Report analysing public spending on mental health care in prisons in England in order to determine if mental health care standards for people in prison are equivalent to those enjoyed in the community at large. It concludes more investment is required in prison mental health services if equivalence is to be achieved.

Prisoners' voices : experiences of the criminal justice system by prisoners with learning disabilities and difficulties

Report containing the findings of a large survey of prisoners with learning disabilities and difficulties, examining their experiences of the criminal justice system, discussing the over-arching themes which emerged and making recommendations for change.

Children of prisoners : custody

Video highlighting the sorts of problems children experience when a parent is in custody and what helps them. It points to the uneven nature of service provision and how some voluntary agencies and Children's Trusts are providing help. Parents who have been in prison and parents left at home discuss their experiences.

International Centre for Prison Studies

The International Centre for Prison Studies seeks to assist governments and other relevant agencies to develop appropriate policies on prisons and the use of imprisonment. It carries out its work on a project or consultancy basis for international agencies, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons: report on HMP Edinburgh: unannounced full inspection 12-21 January 2009

Edinburgh Prison is almost entirely new. With the exception of one hall built 11 years ago the whole prison has been rebuilt in the last five years. Different stages of this rebuilding have been welcomed in previous inspection reports; at each stage, however, the difficulties of managing a prison while massive rebuilding work was taking place on the same site were observed.
