Unlocking the prison estate : modernising the prison system in England and Wales (Research note no.4)

Paper addressing the question of overcrowding in the prison system in England and Wales and arguing that one way to increase capacity in the system is for the UK Government to unlock the value of the prison estate which would release funds to build modern prisons and increase the number of prison places.

HIV-related stigma & discrimination : prisoners

This factsheet highlights the low social status of prisoners and how this can mean they are marginalised and excluded from the mainstream of society. They experience stigma and discrimination behind bars and are often regarded as 'unworthy' in the general community. Prisoners face discrimination because of their status as 'prisoners' (i.e. criminal record and incarceration), because of what being in prison is associated with (drug use, same-sex activities and violence), and what it might lead to (HIV infection).

Report focusing on the treatment of mental health problems in prisons in England and Wales. Its research suggests a third of the spending on mental health services in prison is spent inefficiently and that, in general, prison mental health care is poor. It offers recommendations to rectify this situation.

Report on young offenders in adult establishments

This is a report on an inspection of the conditions in which male and female young offenders are held and the treatment they receive in smaller units within adult establishments in Scotland. The inspection took place in November 2008. The report covers young offenders in Friarton Hall (Perth Prison), Darroch Hall (Green Prison) and Bruce House (Cornton Vale Prison). A number of observations are noted and some recommendations are made for Bruce House.
