The Community Order and the Suspended Sentence Order Three Years On: The views and experiences of probation officers and offenders

The Community Sentences project was set up to investigate and monitor the new Community Order (CO) and the Suspended Sentence Order (SSO) which came into operation in April 2005. The project offers rigorous, objective information and critical analysis about the way the sentences are used, the views of practitioners and the impact on specific groups of offenders.

Risk assessment in criminal justice : politics and practice in Scotland

Dr. Monica Barry recently undertook an international review of effective approaches to risk assessment in social work in the light of the recommendations from the Changing Lives report. This seminar is based on that review and whilst it briefly explores commonalities and differences across various areas of practice in social work, it focuses predominantly on criminal justice and the implications for policy and practice of the drive towards multi-agency partnerships and a common approach to risk assessment and management of offenders in Scotland.

This is a review of the joint inspection programme of youth offending teams in England and Wales. it charts the evolution of youth offending work throughout this period, taking care to look at both the criminal justice and children's services elements. It gives a broad overview of the progress made over the five year period and comments on the programme of inspections with which it will be replaced.
