During the past 30 years, the focus on the extent and nature of child abuse and neglect has been coupled with an increasing interest in the impact on children’s development, health and mental wellbeing. Child maltreatment is both a human rights violation and a complex public health issue, likely caused by a myriad of factors that involve the individual, the family, and the community. This document examines the impact of abuse and neglect on the health of children and young people.

Literature review providing a summary of UK and international research on adolescent neglect and seeking to both draw out the implications for further developments on this topic and inform the preparation of guides for multi-disciplinary teams and for young people.

This briefing evaluates the relationship between child abuse (particularly sexual abuse) and other risk factors present during childhood, and subsequent suicide attempts. It concludes that suicide ideation is a common feature of children and young people who have experienced maltreatment or are at risk of maltreatment.
