Building character

Report of a research project which studied the development of character capabilities contributing to life chances and the factors influencing their development. It concludes that the early years are the critical years in this regard and that parents are, consequently, the principal character builders in society.

Parental mental health : messages from research, policy and practice

This review focuses on one particular aspect of parenting and family life. It is about children living in families where a parent has mental health problems. The aim of this review is to identify – from a range of publications – sources and messages that might help practitioners and managers improve their understanding of the circumstances of children and families living with parental mental health problems, and find responses that have the potential for achieving positive change.

The circumstances of persistently poor families with children: evidence from the Families and Children Study (FACS)

While most research and government interest about poverty has focused on people who are currently experiencing low income, those who have a history of low-income experience have received less attention.

This report presents analysis of the persistence of low income from the Families and Children Study (a large-scale longitudinal study of families with children funded by DWP with contributions from Department for Children, Schools and Families and Department for Transport).

Poverty and income inequality in Scotland: 2007/08

This publication presents annual estimates of the proportion and number of children, working age adults and pensioners living in low income households in Scotland and the distribution of household income across Scotland.

The estimates are used to monitor progress towards UK and Scottish Government targets to reduce poverty and income inequality. The data published for the first time here are for the financial year April 2007 to March 2008.

Achieving our potential: a framework to tackle poverty and income inequality in Scotland

This framework complements the Early Years Framework, and Equally Well, the report of the Ministerial Taskforce on Health Inequalities, all of which taken together form a coherent approach to addressing disadvantage in Scotland. This framework builds on the good work already underway across Scotland and illustrates progress with actions in support of our shared objectives.
