This factsheet presents a workshop guide for staff and volunteers on 'Understanding Human Rights and HIV'. It is designed to be run in 2 hours and covers the fundamentals of human rights, living with HIV and AIDS, recognising stigma and discrimination and understanding HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

This training activity consists of 20 case scenarios and staff are asked to identify whether or not each scenario constitutes abuse of neglect. They are also asked to consider the needs of children at each developmental stage. These exercises can be done individually initially but require group discussion to explore issues effectively.

This is a small group training exercise involving allocation of responsibilities to agencies involved in protecting children.

It should be completed with a large group plenary for discussion and ‘unpacking’ the issues which arise. It is best used in multi-agency training programmes.

An explanation of the statistical operations that can be performed on the different levels of measurement.

This exercise is designed to prompt participants to ‘surface’ the beliefs and values that underlie their reactions to the situations that children are in. This exercise is usually carried out with a large group split into smaller groups of 4 – 5 people. It lasts approximately 90 minutes.

This exercise provides a good basis for challenging values and attitudes and can give trainers evidence in assessable training. This is useful for practitioners across the services, volunteers, and newly qualified staff. The exercise lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suitable for a group of 12 -15.

The aim of this workshop is to dispel the fears of people who are relatively new to child protection issues, and those who feel it is a muddy area of legislation and uncomfortable procedures for themselves and the children and young people they work with.

The beauty of this workshop is it can be used for introduction to child protection issues or to update existing knowledge or beliefs. The exercise lasts between 1 to 3 hours and is suitable for groups of 3 to 20.
