Rights, relationships and recovery : the report of the National Review of Mental Health Nursing in Scotland

This review gathered evidence from a variety of sources to examine the current and future contribution of mental health nurses in Scotland to meeting health policy objectives for the care and support of people with mental health problems.

It takes its place as part of a number of initiatives considering the nursing responses to the new health policy agenda in Scotland.

Study of the workforce and employment issues surrounding self-directed support

Report that presents the findings of a study of the workforce and employment issues surrounding Self-Directed Support (SDS) carried out by Reid Howie Associates for the Scottish Government between March and September 2009.

Self-Directed Support (SDS) provides funding for people to arrange support to meet some, or all of their assessed community care needs, instead of receiving services directly provided by a public body. Most people use the money to employ a personal assistant (PA) and/or to buy support from a service provider.

Safeguarding children : a joint Chief Inspectors' report on arrangements to safeguard children

The government made a commitment in the 1998 White Paper 'Modernising Social Services' to put in place new arrangements to commission from all of its Chief Inspectors of services involved with children a joint report on children’s safeguards.

This is the first of those reports and draws on the findings of a wide range of inspection activity undertaken by individual inspectorates. In addition, a joint inspection was undertaken to address inter-agency arrangements for safeguarding children.

Scotland's Children : Children (Scotland) Act 1995 : Research Findings No 4 : Home Supervision

This study of home supervision conducted from 2000-2002 was commissioned by the Scottish Executive. The research team obtained data from social work case records; reporters; panel members; teachers; social workers; families; a national data set of children on home supervision; and key informants in local authorities. The overall aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of home supervision in promoting beneficial changes in the life of the child.

Extraordinary lives. Creating a positive future for looked after children and young people in Scotland

The purpose of this review is to demonstrate what good care for children and young people who are looked after by local authorities looks like, to identify good practice and to recommend in what ways care can be further improved. It is intended for everyone who is concerned with looked after children and their families; elected members, local authority staff, staff in voluntary organisations, private providers, foster carers, health professionals and those involved in developing and improving children’s services.

The arrest and detention of children subject to immigration control : a report following the Children's Commissioner for England's visit to Yarl's Wood immigration removal centre

Report presenting the findings of the Children's Commissioner for England's visit to Yarl's Wood in 2008 and considering the detention of children there in the light of the UK Government's obligations under Article 37 of the UNCRC. It looks particularly at the effect of detention on children's mental and physical health.
